Boat-Billed Heron

[Boat-Billed Heron]

Photographed from the lagoon trail in Carara National Park, Costa Rica. This unusual nocturnal heron uses his oddly-shaped bill to scoop fish up out of muddy water, rather than spearing them as other herons do. What looks like hair is the nuptial plumes that he uses to attract a mate.
